  • +Does the Sawyer filter remove taste, chemicals and heavy metals from water?

    Taste

The Sawyer filter removes taste that comes from bacteria, dirt, and green matter.

    Chemicals

The Sawyer filter does NOT remove iron, sulfur, other chemicals, or simple compounds. Taste can be masked by using flavor additives like Gatorade or crystal light (filter needs to be cleaned immediately after using them).

    Heavy Metals

The Sawyer filters are not made with charcoal. While other portable filters have charcoal, they lack in amount of media and adequate dwell time. Therefore, they only remove small amounts of heavy metals, pesticides, etc. (when used in real life applications). Try using better sources of water, if possible.

Flow rates vary depending on how clean the filter is and how well you cleaned the filter. Altitude also affects the flow rates (the higher you go the slower the flow. Also, the PointZEROTWO™ filter flows much slower that the Point ONE.

  • +How do I care for my filter during freezing weather?

    Before initial wetting

Filter is safe from freezing temperatures if it has never been wetted.

    After initial wetting

While there is no definitive way to tell if a filter has been damaged due to freezing, Sawyer recommends replacing your filter if you suspect that it has been frozen.

    During trips

If you are in freezing temperatures, we recommend that you store your filter in your pocket or close to your person so that your body heat can prevent freezing. THERE IS NO WARRANTY FOR A FROZEN FILTER.

Sawyer Squeeze Filter

Squeeze Filter Helpful Hints

Sawyer Squeeze™ Filter System is rated 4.7222 out of 5 by 18.
Rated 4 out of 5 by from Good. Better with Modifications. Flow rate is great. Easy to squeeze. As others noted, the squeeze bag could be more durable. When it wears out use a Platypus. I worry about losing the white washer and have not been able to find spares quite the same size and material. I drilled holes in a couple Platypus caps and glued them together to allow easy filling of Platypus pouch. This creates a closed system so dirty water dripping from the squeeze pouch does not contaminate the clean pouch. The syringe is a joke, just use a pouch full of clean water to back flush. You will need a container to fill the squeeze bag from a lake or flat stream, I use a cut down water bottle.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great filter!!! I used the Sawyer Squeeze filter on my 2013 Appalachian Trail thru-hike. The 2,185.9 mile hike took me a little over five months to complete. I would say that at least 25% of the hikers that I saw used the Sawyer filter. I was very happy with it.  It was light weight and easy to use. It was great being able to immediately drink as much filtered water as I wanted. I didn't use the squeeze bags. I screwed the filter directly on to one of my throw away one-liter bottles. And then drank from the filter itself. This method worked great for me. After being on trail for a few months I noticed several people using this method.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Revolutionized water filtration for hikers! The Sawyer Squeeze is the filter that revolutionized water filtration for hikers. For most of us that are long distance hikers, it was either chemicals drops, chemical tablets, bleach, or really heavy pump filters for the few willing to carry them. With the introduction of the Sawyer Squeeze all of that changed. Die-hard chemical users have been switching over to the Squeeze by the thousands. The weight of this filter is what really made the Squeeze the hit that it has become, even with the syringe for backflushing it has been the lightest Absolute One Micron filter you can carry. I have had the Sawyer Squeeze with me on-trail for over 500 days and it is still going strong!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great Product I picked up a Sawyer Squeeze for my EDC bag and could not be happier. when i first saw this product i did not think much of it, but bought it anyway thinking i would most likely never need it anyway. after getting home with it i started my research to see if it was something i would keep or return the next time i made it back to that store, and let me tell you that you would have to kill me to get it away from me now. after looking in to the filter a bit i decided to try it out at a river that i would normally never drink from with out boiling the water first, after drinking about 1L of water that was filtered with my sawyer filter i never got sick. this filter is now in my EDC bag and i never leave home with out it.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from These filters are amazing We have been using the 1 point water filters for our travels to Nepal for the last 4 years and they work like a champ. I bought a few squeeze filters to have in our Bug out bag and took it on our trip to Nepal in Oct. We volunteered at the Kopila Valley Children's Home and all 40+ children where taking a bus on a field trip and each brought water supply to last them for the day trip. At the last minute I grabbed my squeeze filter and sent it along with one of the adults supervising the kids. As it turned out they got lost and the day trip turned into a 16 hour detour and there was no bottled water available for them to purchase. Luckily the squeeze filter was able to filter the water source they did find and the kids where all able to fill their water bottles again with safe drinking water.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Bag problems Love this filter!  But was dismayed last week hiking in the Grand Canyon that my 32 ounce bag had 2 very small holes.  I had not used it much prior and tested and backwashed the kit at home before departure.  I don't think I squeezed the bag too hard last use but don't remember.  I was able to repair and use the bag by the old friend of duct tape. Still, the easy use and light weight out performs other filters which require tubes and tiresome pumping. Being tired and lazy I learned that careful balance of the kit over my water bottles would allow a slow drip fill while I was preparing camp and enjoying the scenery. Some small improvements to the bags would allow easier filling.  A small hole for string or a clip would make it easy to hang the kit off a backpack or low bush for the drip fill method. You really have to pay attention to not lose the various lids for everything.  Especially at night or in windy conditions.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Sawyer Squeeze Filter System for Canoe Camping Used the Sawyer System for the first time on a 4 day canoe/camping/fishing trip in Michigan's UP.  Very easy to use, takes up little space, no o-rings or assembly, dip the pouch over the side, screw the filter assembly on and have a drink.  We used lake water in a warm water lake.  We have been back three days and have not experienced any signs of  digestive system problems.  The lake water had a good taste.  The system is very easy to maintain.  Best type of filtration system I have used.
