  • +Does the Sawyer filter remove taste, chemicals and heavy metals from water?

    Taste

The Sawyer filter removes taste that comes from bacteria, dirt, and green matter.

    Chemicals

The Sawyer filter does NOT remove iron, sulfur, other chemicals, or simple compounds. Taste can be masked by using flavor additives like Gatorade or crystal light (filter needs to be cleaned immediately after using them).

    Heavy Metals

The Sawyer filters are not made with charcoal. While other portable filters have charcoal, they lack in amount of media and adequate dwell time. Therefore, they only remove small amounts of heavy metals, pesticides, etc. (when used in real life applications). Try using better sources of water, if possible.

  • +How do I care for my filter during freezing weather?

    Before initial wetting

Filter is safe from freezing temperatures if it has never been wetted.

    After initial wetting

While there is no definitive way to tell if a filter has been damaged due to freezing, Sawyer recommends replacing your filter if you suspect that it has been frozen.

    During trips

If you are in freezing temperatures, we recommend that you store your filter in your pocket or close to your person so that your body heat can prevent freezing. THERE IS NO WARRANTY FOR A FROZEN FILTER.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Excellent water filter I bought this about a six months ago and have used a few times since then. It is easy to use and very versatile. I have one in my bug out bag, in my get home bag, and in my inch bag. I also have one in my hiking bag and use it often. I highly recommend this product.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Outstanding product I bought a couple of these to put in my water bladders and emergency kits.  Though I'm not a gram shaver, I can tell I saved a bunch of weight and space.  I've been using it in my Geiggerig bladder and forget it's there, which is the best compliment to a product.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Lightweight. No batteries, no problem!! I used the MINI while on a trip to Glacier National Park in the fall of 2013.  I met a friend to drive up and he took care of the food and water prep.  I have been used to UV purification/sterilization but never really used any filters.  I'm glad he turned me on to Sawyer filters!  Possibly having a hike on the AT in my future, I've found it to be the top filter for thru-hikers.  This review is strictly from the 7 days used in the backcountry at GNP as well as tips from my hiking friend on that trip. WEIGHT While we were hiking for 7 days, we were never on the trail for more than 2.5 days at a time.  For me this wouldn't be a problem with a battery-powered device, but when it comes down to it...why rely on batteries OR electronics at all. This filter is extremely lightweight.  While the syringe, straw, and filter may take up more space than other UV products, when it comes down to it, weight is king!   EASE OF USE I carried one 1.5 liter plastic bottle (the MINI attaches) and would either use the straw to drink or push filter into my Nalgene.  I find it easier to fill up the container using the hard plastic bottles as opposed to the bladder which comes with the filter.  It really all depends on the water location and flow.   If you are obtaining water from an easily flowing source, the bladder will work fine!  On the other hand if the source is more of a trickle, it can be difficult to stand the bladder up.  Using a plastic bottle is cheap and effective.  At the same time, wrapping the bladder up and bringing it along too will be very easy too and you'll be prepared for many situations.   Again, we used several methods but mainly squeezing from the large plastic bottle and just drinking straight from the Nalgene with the straw.  Depending on which you do though, remember not to contaminate all of your bottles (unless you just drink straight through the filter, no problem).  NEGATIVE NOTES It's tough to not go out and have night temps go below freezing.  This filter is not to be stored below freezing though.  Sometimes this can be difficult depending on the hike. I have still rated this at 5 stars as it does not affect the products purpose and it simply a personal preference known before using. OTHER NOTES The rated filtration is great. Note that it may not filter viruses, generally the smallest types of particulates. It's true to be cautious, but most of my research before purchasing noted that viruses are not much of a threat in the continental U.S.  Overall, just be smart about where you are obtaining your water to filter.  Is it downhill or downstream from somewhere that human or animal waste could contaminate it?  Any decomposing animals, etc.?  Just because I haven't been sick before when using this, doesn't mean I won't.  Be smart and the filter will serve wonders. Also, I've seen in other reviews to be careful storing (not below freezing) and over-tightening the filter so as to not damage the rubber seal. ADVICE  Follow the instructions carefully when it comes to using the filter with the bladder attached.  Don't wring or use excess force. Don't worry, you'll get the water, no rush!! Also, the syringe is to be compressed with force so the water doesn't just take the "path of least resistance."  Keep it cleaned and it'll last the 100,000 gallons as advertised.  Those who may complain about clogging or weak flow likely don't backflush as much as they should.  We did it every night after we were done with our cooking and filling up for the night.  Remember to backflush with clean/filtered water...otherwise it defeats the purpose.  Make it part of your nightly ritual and you won't forget. I haven't used the Squeeze yet, but it seems just as easy and is guaranteed up to 1 millions gallons! I highly recommend the MINI for any backpacker, hiker (day or extended) or boy scout!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from BEST WATER FILTER FOR THE MONEY I love the sawyer water filter, safe, light weight, easy to use.
Date published: 2014-01-15
Rated 2 out of 5 by from difficult to use I just got back from the first trip using this filter and found it difficult to use. 1) depending on the water source, the pouch can be difficult to fill. 2) the flow out of the filter is not a lot so it takes a long time to fill say a 3 liter container. 3) if you are filling a bladder; trying to hold the bladder and the filter makes it impossible to squeeze the pouch. The filter is good but difficult to use in the backcountry after a long day hiking
